SSPM strengthens its position as an active member of the cultural sector in 2026

As we reported in the last RMS, the November 2025 Delegates' Meeting decided to remain within the Swiss Trade Union Confederation (USS). This strengthens the Central Committee, encourages it to take active action on issues
unions and address issues that bring improvements for music teachers∙e∙s.

The last few years have been devoted to restructuring the association, during which time the SSPM has redefined itself as a purely professional association, having outsourced its valuable private professional music training. Confirmation of membership of the USS marks another important milestone, which is having a lasting impact on the SSPM's new image. The SSPM is now young, active, combative and full of ideas.
We can already see the first results: the SSPM has been invited to the hearings on the 2029 - 2032 culture message, something that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago! The SSPM has become an active, reliable, communicative and strong partner in the cultural sector, and has definitely turned its back on introspection!

The USS brings together a large number of unions to discuss common goals without losing sight of their individual objectives. It's like in an orchestra, where each instrument counts individually, but it's the whole that makes the musical experience perfect. This collaboration creates a strength that far exceeds what individual trade associations and unions can achieve. That's why membership is worthwhile, because our issues, which are of no importance to most Swiss people, acquire a weight through this body that the SSPM could never give them on its own. Membership is even worthwhile when the issues addressed do not directly concern music teachers. They concern us insofar as they may enable our neighbor to obtain better working conditions, to be happier and kinder to us. Or they concern us, because we can follow with our concerns in a second step. We are a community, and our well-being depends on that of the poorest and weakest among us. It's like an orchestra: it's only as good as its weakest member. Strengthening the weakest means strengthening the community, and therefore everyone.

In our age of individualization, community is a very valuable counterbalance that needs to be nurtured, even if it's not fashionable to do so. It is solidarity with other members of our society, compassion, that makes community strong and creates a sense of belonging.
There's a very important reason for being a member of an association: it brings together people with similar or even identical interests, creating a network, a sense of belonging, support and mutual aid, which is diametrically opposed to collective isolation. These days, it's certainly not "cool" to be a member of an association, or even to volunteer for a committee position, but that's precisely what we need. We are social beings who need contact with others to be happy. The SSPM embodies this community, nurtures its network and is open to all professional music teachers who wish to participate. For it is together that we are strong.
In this spirit, the SSPM wishes you a new year full of success and happiness. Together with the other associations in the music sector and the USS, it will work to defend the interests of music professors∙e∙s! So that we're all strong together!
