Il se distancie du syst\u00e8me, ne se sent pas oblig\u00e9 de respecter les normes et surtout, il se place d\u2019\u00e9gal \u00e0 \u00e9gal avec le peuple, observe ce que disent les gens et refl\u00e8te ce qu\u2019ils font. Une fois son esprit \u00e9clair\u00e9, ses plaisanteries nous m\u00e8nent \u00e0 la r\u00e9flexion. Il en est un peu de m\u00eame pour le Septuor en mi b\u00e9mol majeur op. 20 de Beethoven, une \u0153uvre dont le c\u00f4t\u00e9 divertissant d\u00e9lectait d\u00e9j\u00e0 ses contemporains. Peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame que cela \u00e9nervait le compositeur, d\u2019ailleurs, car dans une lettre o\u00f9 il demande \u00e0 son \u00e9diteur Hoffmeister &#038; K\u00fchnel d\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer la publication de la partition, il \u00e9crit : \u00ab Veuillez faire na\u00eetre mon septuor un peu plus rapidement \u2013 la populace l\u2019attend \u00bb (le 8 avril 1802). Pour beaucoup, le ton \u00e9tait certes populaire, mais c\u2019est surtout le son de cet ensemble qui \u00e9tait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque \u00e0 la fois inou\u00ef et novateur. Car l\u2019instrumentation ne correspond pas \u00e0 celle d\u2019un quatuor \u00e0 cordes ni \u00e0 celle d\u2019une harmonie de vents, et elle n\u2019atteint pas non plus l\u2019ampleur du petit orchestre d\u2019une symphonie. Dans ses expos\u00e9s sur la musique de 1857 (qui constituent la troisi\u00e8me partie de l\u2019ouvrage de Friedrich Theodor Vischers <em>\u00c4sthetik oder Wissenschaft des Sch\u00f6nen<\/em>), Karl Reinhold K\u00f6stlich y a vu un attrait particulier et un v\u00e9ritable d\u00e9fi pour chaque compositeur : \u00ab l\u2019instrumentation mixte [d\u2019un septuor par exemple] est une forme moins stricte, mais sa r\u00e9alisation si l\u2019on veut qu\u2019elle soit parfaite demande \u00e0 la fois de la chance et du talent de la part du compositeur \u00bb (col. 1056).<\/p>\n<p>La structure de l\u2019\u0153uvre avec un total de six mouvements est assez proche de celle de la s\u00e9r\u00e9nade. Et on y trouve un ton particuli\u00e8rement joyeux et agr\u00e9able, surtout dans le menuet, les variations et le scherzo \u2013 bien que le tout soit pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 d\u2019une introduction pratiquement symphonique au d\u00e9but du premier mouvement ; le d\u00e9but de la finale est, quant \u00e0 lui, semblable \u00e0 une marche fun\u00e8bre. Aujourd\u2019hui encore, on s\u2019\u00e9tonne que la complexit\u00e9 de certaines parties (les cuivres en particulier) n\u2019ait pas nui \u00e0 la popularit\u00e9 de cette \u0153uvre. Beethoven lui-m\u00eame avait soulign\u00e9 \u00e0 son \u00e9diteur que la distribution \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0tutti obligati (je ne peux rien \u00e9crire de facultatif, car je suis moi-m\u00eame n\u00e9 avec un accompagnement oblig\u00e9) \u00bb. C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019il a insuffl\u00e9 l\u2019esprit de tous les ensembles mixtes \u00e0 venir. Son septuor est rapidement devenu un mod\u00e8le.
