La tessiture du cor naturel \u00e9tait limit\u00e9e \u00e0 la s\u00e9rie harmonique, qui ne permettait pas une ligne diatonique ou chromatique continue. Avant l\u2019introduction des pistons (dont Johannes Brahms n\u2019\u00e9tait d\u2019ailleurs pas un grand adepte), cette limitation ne pouvait \u00eatre surmont\u00e9e que par la technique dite des sons bouch\u00e9s \u2013 dans laquelle la main droite bouchait le pavillon pour modifier la hauteur du son. Seuls quelques musiciens exceptionnels r\u00e9ussissent \u00e0 compenser suffisamment le changement de son caract\u00e9ristique (\u00e0 savoir passer d\u2019un son ouvert \u00e0 un son ferm\u00e9) que cette technique impliquait. Parmi eux figure Wenzel Stich (1746-1803), n\u00e9 en Boh\u00eame, qui se faisait \u00e9galement appeler, \u00e0 l\u2019italienne, Giovanni Punto. Il avait pu obtenir de Beethoven qu\u2019il participe avec lui \u00e0 une acad\u00e9mie au Hofburgtheater le 18 avril 1800, mais l\u2019\u0153uvre command\u00e9e pour cette occasion ne fut achev\u00e9e qu\u2019au tout dernier moment. Ferdinand Ries cite cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement de m\u00e9moire : \u00ab Beethoven a presque toujours repouss\u00e9 jusqu\u2019au dernier moment la composition des \u0153uvres qui lui avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 command\u00e9es [\u2026]. Il a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 travailler la veille de la repr\u00e9sentation, mais l\u2019\u0153uvre \u00e9tait pr\u00eate le soir du concert. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Est-ce la raison pour laquelle le mouvement lent central (<em>Poco adagio, quasi andante<\/em>) n\u2019a qu\u2019un d\u00e9veloppement relativement faible et joue plut\u00f4t le r\u00f4le d\u2019une introduction au Rondo final ? D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du premier mouvement, on se rend compte que Beethoven a d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment jou\u00e9 avec les possibilit\u00e9s tonales du cor et qu\u2019il a probablement \u00e9crit cette sonate sur mesure pour Stich\/Punto. Le cor d\u00e9bute par un signal utilisant la s\u00e9rie harmonique naturelle. Mais d\u00e8s qu\u2019il passe au th\u00e8me principal, les notes rapproch\u00e9es sont injouables sur un instrument sans pistons si l\u2019on ne ma\u00eetrise pas \u00e0 la perfection la technique des sons bouch\u00e9s.
