Car la Cinqui\u00e8me symphonie s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve bien au-dessus de la tradition du genre, et ce \u00e0 bien des \u00e9gards. D\u2019une part, dans le final, Beethoven agrandit l\u2019orchestre, et il estime utile de le mentionner dans une lettre adress\u00e9e au comte Franz von Oppersdorff (\u00e0 qui est d\u00e9di\u00e9e la 4e symphonie) : \u00ab Le dernier morceau de la symphonie est avec 3 trombones et un flautino [piccolo] \u2013 il n\u2019y a pas 3 timbales, mais elles feront plus de bruit que 6, et m\u00eame un meilleur bruit. \u00bb D\u2019autre part, le scherzo et le final sont formellement li\u00e9s, de sorte que le scherzo semble \u00eatre une introduction surdimensionn\u00e9e, avec cette transition de l\u2019obscur vers le radieux do majeur du dernier mouvement. Beethoven r\u00e9p\u00e8te cet effet \u00e9tonnant au d\u00e9but de la reprise, ce que m\u00eame Louis Spohr, qui a par ailleurs accueilli l\u2019\u0153uvre avec retenue, salue avec respect : \u00ab Le dernier mouvement, avec son bruit insignifiant, est le moins satisfaisant ; le retour du scherzo dans celui-ci, cependant, est une id\u00e9e si heureuse que le compositeur est \u00e0 envier. Il est d\u2019un effet ravissant \u00bb. Troisi\u00e8mement, Beethoven commence le premier mouvement d\u2019une mani\u00e8re radicale : pas avec une introduction lente, pas avec un th\u00e8me bien formul\u00e9, mais seulement avec un motif de base compos\u00e9 de deux tons et quatre notes, dont l\u2019impulsion est d\u00e9j\u00e0 arr\u00eat\u00e9e par un point d\u2019orgue \u00e0 la deuxi\u00e8me mesure, et qui se r\u00e9p\u00e8te dans presque toutes les mesures du mouvement.<\/p>\n<p>Avec cette symphonie cependant, Beethoven introduit non seulement un nouveau concept musical, il prend \u00e9galement le chemin qui le conduit du classicisme viennois au romantisme. E. T. A. Hoffmann l\u2019avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 reconnu dans sa critique de l\u2019\u0153uvre publi\u00e9e en 1810 dans l\u2019<em>Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung<\/em> de Leipzig : \u00ab Ainsi, la musique instrumentale de Beethoven nous ouvre le domaine de l\u2019immense et de l\u2019incommensurable. Des rayons lumineux traversent ce royaume au plus profond de la nuit, et nous prenons conscience des ombres gigantesques qui montent et descendent, nous enfermant de plus en plus \u00e9troitement et d\u00e9truisant tout en nous sauf la douleur d\u2019un d\u00e9sir infini [\u2026]. Mozart r\u00e9veille le surhomme, le merveilleux qui habite l\u2019esprit int\u00e9rieur. La musique de Beethoven d\u00e9place les leviers du frisson, de la peur, de l\u2019horreur, de la douleur et r\u00e9veille cette aspiration infinie qui est l\u2019essence m\u00eame du romantisme. Beethoven est un compositeur purement romantique (et donc vraiment musical) \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019autographe, avec ses nombreuses suppressions et r\u00e9visions, montre que le sublime d\u00e9crit ci-dessus \u00e9tait le fruit d\u2019un travail acharn\u00e9 pour Beethoven.
