Selon Richard Wagner, l\u2019\u0153uvre \u00e9tait une \u00ab apoth\u00e9ose de la danse \u00bb, expression qu\u2019il a utilis\u00e9e moins pour d\u00e9signer une chor\u00e9graphie possible que pour mettre en mots le geste g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la partition.<\/p>\n<p>Emotionnellement, le c\u0153ur de cette symphonie est toutefois le deuxi\u00e8me mouvement, lent malgr\u00e9 l\u2019indication <em>Allegretto<\/em> (un peu rapide). Le ton est sombre, puissant, avec le tragique d\u2019une marche fun\u00e8bre que Beethoven ne quitte que dans deux passages \u2013 semblables \u00e0 un trio r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9 \u2013 dans un la majeur plus l\u00e9ger, m\u00e9lodiquement port\u00e9 par les clarinettes et les bassons. Un accord ouvert aux cuivres encadre solennellement le mouvement au d\u00e9but et \u00e0 la fin. Cette marche fun\u00e8bre se caract\u00e9rise avant tout par son rythme soutenu (long \u2013 court \u2013 court), compl\u00e9t\u00e9 de deux notes longues, rythme qui donnera d\u2019ailleurs son surnom \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre, encore courant en France, de <em>Symphonie dactylique<\/em>. Lors des premi\u00e8res repr\u00e9sentations, quelques mois seulement apr\u00e8s la victoire sur Napol\u00e9on \u00e0 la bataille de Leipzig, remport\u00e9e avec des pertes consid\u00e9rables, le public a imm\u00e9diatement compris la trag\u00e9die exprim\u00e9e dans l\u2019Allegretto. Les Viennois partagent eux aussi cette \u00e9motion, \u00e0 en croire un compte-rendu de l\u2019<em>Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung<\/em> de Leipzig. Les auditeurs auraient chaque soir r\u00e9clam\u00e9 un bis, difficilement imaginable en concert aujourd\u2019hui : \u00ab L\u2019Andante [!] (la mineur) a d\u00fb \u00eatre r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 chaque fois et a ravi les connaisseurs comme les non-sp\u00e9cialistes. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Ce mouvement est encore capable de susciter des \u00e9motions similaires aujourd\u2019hui, preuve en est son utilisation fr\u00e9quente comme musique de film pour des sc\u00e8nes apocalyptiques \u2013 non pas au sens illustratif, mais comme une mise en musique de l\u2019\u00e9tat de choc int\u00e9rieur. On l\u2019entend par exemple, dans <em>Le discours d\u2019un roi <\/em>(2010). La partition de Beethoven accompagne le discours radiophonique du roi d\u2019Angleterre George VI, dans lequel il annonce \u00e0 son peuple l\u2019entr\u00e9e du pays dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale \u2013 anticipant les innombrables victimes. Ce m\u00eame mouvement l\u00e9g\u00e8rement raccourci est \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re beaucoup plus spectaculaire dans <em>Knowing <\/em>(2009), lorsque Nicolas Cage (alias John), peu avant que la terre s\u2019embrase dans une mer de flammes, monte dans sa voiture, y ins\u00e8re un CD et, coup\u00e9 du bruit ext\u00e9rieur, se rend chez ses parents en passant devant la foule d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9e qui se livre au pillage dans cet enfer.
