Selon un critique, cela sonnait \u00ab\u00a0comme du chinois \u00bb, bien qu\u2019il ait admis que peut-\u00eatre le temps viendrait \u00ab o\u00f9 ce qui nous semblait \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue obscur et confus serait reconnu clairement et sous des formes agr\u00e9ables \u00bb. Quoiqu\u2019il en soit, l\u2019\u00e9diteur viennois de Beethoven, Mathias Artaria, ne voulait pas attendre aussi longtemps : il a demand\u00e9 au compositeur de remplacer la fugue par un autre mouvement plus conventionnel (ce sera finalement un long rondo). Il aura fallu un peu de persuasion et d\u2019argent sur la table pour que Beethoven acc\u00e8de \u00e0 contrec\u0153ur \u00e0 cette demande. Karl Holz, le violoncelliste du quatuor, se souviendra plus tard : \u00ab il l\u2019aimait beaucoup [la fugue] et avait du mal \u00e0 la s\u00e9parer du quatuor \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Quand bien m\u00eame il est sans aucun doute \u00e9norme, le mouvement a re\u00e7u un nom trompeur : la \u00ab Grande Fugue \u00bb n\u2019est ni une composition au sens du <em>Stile antico<\/em> ni du genre du <em>Clavier bien temp\u00e9r\u00e9<\/em> de Bach, que Beethoven avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9tudi\u00e9 \u00e0 Bonn dans les cours de Christian Gottlob Neefe. Outre ses consid\u00e9rables difficult\u00e9s techniques, il s\u2019agit plut\u00f4t d\u2019un d\u00e9veloppement radical et r\u00e9volutionnaire de la fugue, de sorte que Beethoven pouvait \u00e0 juste titre pr\u00e9tendre que l\u2019\u0153uvre \u00e9tait \u00ab tant\u00f4t libre tant\u00f4t recherch\u00e9e \u00bb (en fran\u00e7ais dans le texte). Igor Stravinsky a m\u00eame consid\u00e9r\u00e9 qu\u2019il s\u2019agissait l\u00e0 \u00ab d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce musicale absolument contemporaine, qui le restera \u00e0 jamais \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9cision de publier la fugue s\u00e9par\u00e9ment en tant qu\u2019opus 133, Mathias Artaria a de nouveau frapp\u00e9 \u00e0 la porte de Beethoven pour obtenir une version pour piano \u00e0 quatre mains, ce qu\u2019il a tout d\u2019abord refus\u00e9, consid\u00e9rant qu\u2019il s\u2019agissait l\u00e0 juste d\u2019un travail manuel de transcription. Toutefois, Beethoven fut si m\u00e9content d\u2019un arrangement d\u2019Anton Halm qu\u2019il en cr\u00e9a finalement lui-m\u00eame une version avec un num\u00e9ro d\u2019opus s\u00e9par\u00e9, pour laquelle il demanda \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9diteur des honoraires un peu particuliers, selon les indications mi-humoristiques, mi-s\u00e9rieuses suivantes : \u00ab Premi\u00e8rement, punition p\u00e9nale consistant en 2 <em>Klavierschulen<\/em> de Clementi et 3 jolis tirages du portait de L. v.
