Beethoven, un peu agac\u00e9, a alors not\u00e9 sur l\u2019\u00e9preuve : \u00ab recueil de choses vol\u00e9es \u00e7\u00e0 et l\u00e0 \u00bb. Craignant d\u2019\u00eatre pris au mot, il s\u2019est toutefois expliqu\u00e9 peu de temps apr\u00e8s dans une lettre : \u00ab vous avez \u00e9crit que c\u2019\u00e9tait cens\u00e9 \u00eatre un quatuor original, \u00e7a m\u2019a froiss\u00e9, alors, pour plaisanter j\u2019ai \u00e9crit qu\u2019il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 vol\u00e9. Mais c\u2019est faux. Il est absolument nouveau \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>En effet, malgr\u00e9 l\u2019esprit et la formulation amusante de cette remarque, l\u2019\u0153uvre est nouvelle \u00e0 plusieurs \u00e9gards : avec un total de sept mouvements (Beethoven parlait de \u00ab\u00a0pi\u00e8ces \u00bb), dont quatre peuvent \u00eatre r\u00e9unis pour former deux paires, le quatuor entre dans une nouvelle dimension, m\u00eame vu de l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur. Mais les caract\u00e9ristiques des mouvements individuels pointent aussi bien au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019horizon de l\u2019\u00e9poque, m\u00eame jusqu\u2019au 20e si\u00e8cle : le <em>fugato<\/em> m\u00e9lancolique du premier mouvement ; le deuxi\u00e8me, qui tourne en rond de mani\u00e8re subtile ; le troisi\u00e8me, de type r\u00e9citatif, qui conduit aux variations centrales, le <em>presto<\/em> effront\u00e9 ainsi que le sixi\u00e8me mouvement, court et \u00e9l\u00e9giaque, qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de un final angulaire et subjectif. Bien que Beethoven n\u2019ait pas pu assister \u00e0 une repr\u00e9sentation publique de l\u2019\u0153uvre, il a exig\u00e9 que l\u2019ex\u00e9cution se fasse presque sans aucune interruption. Ainsi Karl Holz, le violoncelliste du Quatuor Schuppanzigh, demandait d\u00e9j\u00e0 fin ao\u00fbt 1826 dans un cahier de conversation : \u00ab doit-on le jouer sans s\u2019arr\u00eater ? \u2014 Mais alors, nous ne pourrons pas faire de bis ! \u2014 Quand pourrons-nous nous accorder ? [\u2026] Nous allons commander des cordes solides. \u00bb On peut facilement imaginer les r\u00e9ponses correspondantes.<\/p>\n<p>Si l\u2019on en croit les souvenirs de Holz, transcrits plus tard par une troisi\u00e8me personne, ce quatuor \u00e0 cordes est aussi la derni\u00e8re musique que Franz Schubert a entendue. Quelques jours avant sa mort, on dit qu\u2019une repr\u00e9sentation priv\u00e9e a eu lieu ; Schubert a peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame lui-m\u00eame pris la partie d\u2019alto. Ludwig Nohl \u00e9crit \u00e0 ce sujet : \u00ab Messieurs Holz, Karl Gro\u00df et le baron K\u00f6nig l\u2019ont jou\u00e9 pour lui faire plaisir. Seul Doleschalek, professeur de piano, \u00e9tait \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sent. Schubert \u00e9tait si ravi, si enthousiaste et si touch\u00e9 que tout le monde a craint pour sa sant\u00e9. Un petit malaise qui avait pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 et qui n\u2019avait pas encore compl\u00e8tement pass\u00e9 s\u2019est fortement accru, s\u2019est transform\u00e9 en typhus, et Schubert est mort cinq jours plus tard \u00bb.
