Pour une commanditaire (non nomm\u00e9e), il devait \u00e9crire une \u00ab sonate r\u00e9volutionnaire \u00bb qui pourrait repr\u00e9senter les \u00e9v\u00e9nements de mani\u00e8re programmatique, ou du moins les \u00e9voquer. Son refus, le 8 avril 1802, fut rempli d\u2019indignation : \u00ab Messieurs, que diable me proposez-vous l\u00e0 ? \u2014 Ecrire une telle sonate au moment de la r\u00e9volution, \u00e7\u2019aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 imaginable, mais maintenant que tout essaie de se remettre sur les voies de l\u2019ancien r\u00e9gime, que Bonaparte a sign\u00e9 un concordat avec le pape \u2013 une telle sonate ? \u2013 une <em>missa pro sancta maria a tre vocis<\/em> ou des v\u00eapres, etc., \u00e7a passerait encore \u2013 aujourd\u2019hui je prendrais m\u00eame un pinceau \u2013 et \u00e9crirais un <em>credo in unum<\/em> avec de grosses notes \u2013 mais mon Dieu, une telle sonate \u2013 en ces temps de renouveau chr\u00e9tien \u2013 hoho \u2013 laissez-moi en dehors de tout \u00e7a \u2013 rien n\u2019en sortira [&#8230;] \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Il n\u2019est pas possible de d\u00e9terminer clairement comment Beethoven s\u2019est r\u00e9ellement positionn\u00e9 par rapport \u00e0 la politique de son temps ni m\u00eame s\u2019il a sympathis\u00e9 avec les id\u00e9es r\u00e9publicaines. \u00c0 l\u2019occasion de la mobilisation g\u00e9n\u00e9rale autrichienne de 1797, il compose, probablement d\u00e9sempar\u00e9 face \u00e0 la politique expansionniste fran\u00e7aise, un <em>Chant d\u2019adieu au citoyen viennois<\/em> WoO 121 (\u00e0 l\u2019intention du corps des volontaires viennois), suivi d\u2019un <em>Chant de guerre des Autrichiens<\/em> WoO 122 (1797). Quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard seulement, Napol\u00e9on, en tant que premier consul, \u00e9tait tenu en tr\u00e8s haute estime \u00e0 Vienne : Beethoven \u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement enthousiaste \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de sa clairvoyance d\u2019homme d\u2019\u00c9tat et du d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 dot\u00e9e de droits civils (y compris d\u2019un Code civil toujours valable dans une large mesure aujourd\u2019hui). Il a d\u2019ailleurs m\u00eame envisag\u00e9 de s\u2019installer \u00e0 Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Toutefois, apr\u00e8s qu\u2019on eut appris \u00e0 Vienne que Napol\u00e9on s\u2019\u00e9tait fait couronner empereur \u00e0 Paris le 2 d\u00e9cembre 1804, Beethoven rejeta compl\u00e8tement ces plans id\u00e9alistes. C\u2019est dans ce contexte que la Symphonie n\u00b0 3 en mi b\u00e9mol majeur op. 55 change de d\u00e9dicataire, comme le raconte Ferdinand Ries, un ami de Beethoven, dans une anecdote (loin d\u2019\u00eatre certaine) : \u00ab Dans cette symphonie, Beethoven avait pens\u00e9 \u00e0 Bonaparte, mais alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait encore premier consul. [&#8230;] Moi-m\u00eame, ainsi que plusieurs de ses amis proches, avons vu cette symphonie, d\u00e9j\u00e0 copi\u00e9e en partition, \u00e9tal\u00e9e sur sa table, o\u00f9, tout en haut de la page de titre, \u00e9taient \u00e9crits les mots \u2039Bonaparte\u203a et, tout en bas, \u2039Luigi van Beethoven\u203a, pas un mot de plus. J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier \u00e0 lui annoncer que Bonaparte s\u2019\u00e9tait proclam\u00e9 empereur, ce qui l\u2019a rendu furieux et l\u2019a fait s\u2019exclamer : \u2039Il n\u2019est donc pas diff\u00e9rent d\u2019un homme ordinaire ! Maintenant, il va aussi fouler aux pieds tous les droits de l\u2019homme, il ne fera que satisfaire son ambition ; il va s\u2019\u00e9lever plus haut, comme tous les autres, et devenir un tyran !\u203a Beethoven s\u2019est approch\u00e9 de la table, a saisi la page de titre en haut, l\u2019a d\u00e9chir\u00e9e et l\u2019a jet\u00e9e par terre. La premi\u00e8re page a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9\u00e9crite, et ce n\u2019est qu\u2019apr\u00e8s cela que la symphonie a re\u00e7u le titre : \u2039Sinfonia eroica\u203a. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Les \u00e9v\u00e9nements historiques montrent que Beethoven avait vu juste. Car apr\u00e8s que Vienne eut \u00e9t\u00e9 occup\u00e9e sans r\u00e9sistance par Napol\u00e9on le 13 novembre 1805, la ville ne fut reprise qu\u2019apr\u00e8s un tir d\u2019artillerie lourde dans la nuit du 11 au 12 mai 1809. Beethoven passa ces heures dans la cave de son fr\u00e8re Kaspar Karl (1774-1815).
