Invece di procedere per genere musicale, i ricercatori hanno esaminato la situazione socio-economica dei musicisti non impiegati in un'orchestra - i musicisti freelance. Sette musicisti, il pi\u00f9 possibile diversi per et\u00e0, sesso e tipo di locale, sono stati invitati a contattarne altri tre, e cos\u00ec via, per arrivare a una popolazione di 123 persone da cui un team di ricercatori ha raccolto dati quantitativi e qualitativi attraverso interviste individuali. Le interviste sono una seconda caratteristica speciale di questo approccio, che questo libro illustra con estratti anonimi.<\/p>\n<p>Da questo studio emergono tre gruppi: i \"creatori\", che eseguono opere originali in un contesto concertistico o di spettacolo dal vivo; gli \"artigiani\", che forniscono un servizio ed eseguono un repertorio non proprio, di solito fuori dal palco; e infine gli \"insegnanti\". Sebbene i risultati dell'indagine non forniscano rivelazioni sorprendenti sulla vita materiale dei musicisti indipendenti nella Svizzera francese, alcune ipotesi vengono confermate.
