S\u00ec, c'era tempo a sufficienza, oltre a un transatlantico per il quale il famoso compositore Jonathan Savournon aveva gentilmente ricevuto due biglietti. Le sue opere non sono sopravvissute, e per una buona ragione: il compositore \u00e8 nato dalla fervida immaginazione di Jules Verne. Il suo romanzo <em>Viaggiare a ritroso in Inghilterra e Scozia<\/em> \u00e8 ancora attuale, soprattutto nella sua conclusione: \"Toccarono tutto, ma a dire il vero non videro nulla! Non fu il viaggio di Mendelssohn nelle Highlands o la sua Sinfonia scozzese a ispirare Jules Verne, ma un'escursione che egli stesso fece nel 1859 con il compositore francese Aristide Hignard (1822-1898).<\/p>\n<p>Si sa che Beethoven non ha visto n\u00e9 la Senna n\u00e9 il Firth of Forth. Tuttavia, un certo George Thomson (1757-1851) di Edimburgo lo contatt\u00f2 nel 1803 dopo avergli commissionato arrangiamenti di musica da camera e brevi introduzioni ad arie scozzesi di Haydn, Pleyel e Ko\u017eeluh: per voce, pianoforte, violino e violoncello. Nel 1820, Beethoven aveva realizzato circa 170 arrangiamenti per se stesso, e possiamo immaginare che non si trattasse solo di mangiare. Questi arrangiamenti sostituiscono i trii per pianoforte originali che aveva completato nel 1811, l'ultimo dei quali era la sua grande opera Op. 97. Le commissioni di Thomson per le introduzioni e le conclusioni strumentali avevano aperto Beethoven a una libert\u00e0 di scrittura che non era percepita a Edimburgo. Un giornalista anonimo scrisse dell'edizione del 1822 pubblicata da Schlesinger a Berlino: \"Non \u00e8 un bardo addormentato che viene svegliato da rovine nella nebbia: \u00e8 lo spirito indipendente di Beethoven che vaga sulle colline del sonno in un paese che lui stesso ha sognato e chiamato Scozia\".
