La matematica ha la nozione di deviazione standard, che determina la distanza da una media. La musica, invece, ha inventato la forma sonata. Descritta da Adolph Bernhard Marx a met\u00e0 del XIX secolo e insegnata ancora oggi nelle scuole, la forma sonata \u00e8 un modello che pu\u00f2 essere applicato alla lettera solo a pochi casi particolarmente noiosi, senza eccezioni. Termini come esposizione, sviluppo, tema secondario e ricapitolazione sono ancora utilizzati e sembrano indispensabili, ma per una ragione e una sola: sono i criteri astratti con cui le particolarit\u00e0 di un'opera possono essere adeguatamente descritte - di solito, almeno.<\/p>\n<p>Non fu quindi una sorpresa quando, nel 1815 e nel 1816, Beethoven esegu\u00ec per la prima volta la sua Sonata op. 101. <br \/> \"diversamente\". Rompe con le convenzioni che all'epoca erano ancora giovani, e costringe Marx a osservare laconicamente che qui \"il nome sonata \u00e8 usato per una forma che si discosta seriamente dalla sonata ordinaria\" (<em>Beethoven. Leben und Schaffen.<\/em> 2a edizione, 1863, vol. 2 p. 216). Ci\u00f2 vale innanzitutto per la sequenza dei movimenti, con un movimento iniziale che subisce una trasformazione formale, una marcia animata e un movimento lento che funge da sorta di lunga introduzione al finale (con tanto di reminiscenza del movimento principale). Il resto dell'opera segue l'esempio, con elementi di fantasia, recitativo e toccata, mescolati a una scrittura a volte espressamente contrappuntistica: il trio nella marcia \u00e8 in forma di canone, e lo sviluppo del finale \u00e8 una lunga fuga. Infine, Beethoven ampli\u00f2 i suoi orizzonti includendo indicazioni dettagliate di tempo ed espressione, scritte in tedesco.
