Oggi la popolarit\u00e0 di una canzone \u00e8 determinata dalle classifiche, ma in passato era per strada che una melodia poteva diventare famosa, quando veniva canticchiata o fischiettata dai passanti. Nei decenni che precedettero il XIX secolo, molti compositori amarono riprendere queste melodie note, scrissero numerosi arrangiamenti e variazioni (soprattutto per pianoforte) e furono ben pagati dagli editori. Joseph Gelinek (1758-1825) era conosciuto ai suoi tempi come il \"re delle variazioni\". Beethoven, invece, fu pi\u00f9 cauto in questo campo.<\/p>\n<p>Tali variazioni si trovano raramente nelle partiture di musica da camera, ma sono presenti nel finale del Trio per pianoforte e orchestra in si bemolle maggiore, op. 11, con clarinetto (invece che con violino). Il tema \u00e8 \"Pria ch'io l'impegno\", una melodia tratta dall'opera <em>L'amor marinaro ossia Il corsaro<\/em> (Amore in mare o corsaro) di Joseph Weigl (1766-1846), rappresentata per la prima volta il 15 ottobre 1797 al Burgtheater di Vienna. In questo caso, per\u00f2, probabilmente non \u00e8 stata solo la musica trascinante a contribuire alla sua rapida diffusione, soprattutto perch\u00e9 non proviene da un'aria o da una canzonetta, ma da un terzetto (all'inizio del secondo atto) tra il capitano, il suo servo Pasquale e Cisofautte, un maestro di cappella che sa come stabilire le priorit\u00e0: \"Ma prima di poter \/ Dimostrare che sono un maestro \/ Devo prima mangiare \/ Allora vedranno \/ Di cosa sono capace \/ Quando dall'alto \/ Gi\u00f9 in fondo \/ Il mio ventre vuoto \/ Suona cos\u00ec chiaro. \" Il linguaggio popolare non \u00e8 lontano con \"Uno stomaco vuoto \/ Non salta bene\".<\/p>\n<p>Anche se non \u00e8 rimasto popolare fino ad oggi, \"Pria ch'io l'impegno\" ha ispirato molti contemporanei a scrivere variazioni, fantasie e altri pezzi - oltre a opere di Joseph Eybler, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Joseph W\u00f6lfl e Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Nicol\u00f2 Paganini ha scritto un \"Pria ch'io l'impegno\" basato sulla melodia. <em>Sonata con Variazioni<\/em> op. 29 per violino con accompagnamento orchestrale. E gi\u00e0 nel 1832 un certo H. W. Stolze pubblic\u00f2 un insieme di variazioni per pianoforte e violoncello, op. 6.
