Il est alors au sommet de sa carri\u00e8re cr\u00e9ative : les \u0153uvres sont proches des Symphonies n\u00b0 5 et 6, du Concerto pour piano n\u00b0 5 et de la Fantaisie chorale, qui d\u00e9passe de loin les mod\u00e8les du genre. L\u2019opus 70 est d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 la comtesse Anna Maria Erd\u00f6dy (1778-1837), chez qui Beethoven ne s\u2019est pas seulement install\u00e9 pour une courte p\u00e9riode, mais qui, puisqu\u2019elle tenait salon, offrait \u00e9galement un espace d\u2019ex\u00e9cution de ses \u0153uvres. C\u2019est ainsi que Johann Friedrich Reichardt rapporte dans ses <em>Lettres confidentielles<\/em>, le 31 d\u00e9cembre 1808 : \u00ab J\u2019ai de nouveau pass\u00e9 une double soir\u00e9e musicale. D\u2019abord un quatuor chez la comtesse Erd\u00f6dy. Beethoven a jou\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on magistrale et avec enthousiasme les nouveaux trios qu\u2019il avait r\u00e9cemment cr\u00e9\u00e9s, dans lesquels il y avait un mouvement <em>cantabile<\/em> c\u00e9leste [op. 70\/2, 3e mouvement] comme je n\u2019en avais jamais entendu auparavant, et qui est la chose la plus belle et la plus gracieuse que j\u2019aie jamais entendue ; il soul\u00e8ve et fait fondre mon \u00e2me chaque fois que j\u2019y repense. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Le Trio avec piano en r\u00e9 majeur de Beethoven, op. 70\/1, est beaucoup plus radical : les premier et dernier mouvements, concis, sont si pleins d\u2019\u00e9nergie et de rythme qu\u2019ils atteignent parfois les limites de ce qui est possible sur le plan sonore (\u00e0 condition que l\u2019ensemble risque vraiment l\u2019impitoyabilit\u00e9 envisag\u00e9e par l\u2019auteur). En revanche, le mouvement lent (<em>largo assai et espressivo<\/em>), d\u2019apparence presque statique, tire principalement sa tension int\u00e9rieure de l\u2019harmonie. Sa sonorit\u00e9 singuli\u00e8re, qui vaudra plus tard \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre le surnom de \u00ab Trio des Esprits \u00bb, est cependant beaucoup plus efficace avec un instrument \u00e0 clavier de l\u2019\u00e9poque, voire une copie, qu\u2019avec un piano de concert moderne. Cela est d\u00fb non seulement \u00e0 la tension plus faible des cordes (le cadre en fonte n\u2019avait pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 invent\u00e9), mais aussi \u00e0 l\u2019action plus subtile des touches et aux \u00e9touffoirs, construits diff\u00e9remment. C\u2019est exactement ce que le compositeur et \u00e9crivain E.\u00a0T. A. Hoffmann a soulign\u00e9 dans un compte-rendu tr\u00e8s d\u00e9taill\u00e9 du mouvement \u2013 gravant po\u00e9tiquement l\u2019aspect particulier de cette partition pour la post\u00e9rit\u00e9 : \u00ab [\u2026] le critique ne mentionne plus qu\u2019une seule particularit\u00e9 qui distingue et souligne ce mouvement par rapport \u00e0 tant de compositions pour piano \u00e0 queue. Dans le th\u00e8me principal, lorsqu\u2019il est ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 par le violon et le violoncelle, le piano a le plus souvent un mouvement en sextolets [,] qui doivent \u00eatre ex\u00e9cut\u00e9s <em>pp.<\/em> et <em>leggiermente.<\/em> C\u2019est presque la seule fa\u00e7on d\u2019affirmer la sonorit\u00e9 d\u2019un bon piano \u00e0 queue de mani\u00e8re \u00e9tonnamment efficace.
