Secondo i ricordi di Carl Czerny, egli confess\u00f2 all'amico Wenzel Krumpholtz: \"Non sono soddisfatto del mio lavoro precedente. D'ora in poi voglio innovare\". Czerny aveva gi\u00e0 fatto riferimento a questa affermazione in relazione alle Sonate per pianoforte op. 31, in cui Beethoven aveva rivisitato il genere. Questo vale non solo per la Sonata <em>La tempesta <\/em>(op. 31\/2), nonch\u00e9 la Sonata in sol maggiore (op. 31\/1), entrambe pubblicate nell'aprile del 1803 da Hans Georg N\u00e4geli a Zurigo nel volume 5 della sua opera <em>Elenco dei tastieristi<\/em>. Solo nel novembre 1804 segu\u00ec la Sonata in mi bemolle maggiore, op. 31\/3, nel volume 11, con una ristampa della <em>Patetico<\/em> op. 13, perch\u00e9 Beethoven non aveva consegnato la quarta sonata che N\u00e4geli stava aspettando. - Per inciso, la <em>Elenco dei tastieristi<\/em> \u00e8 la controparte moderna del <em>Le opere d'arte musicali nella forte tradizione di Schreibart<\/em> (opere musicali rigorosamente scritte) che N\u00e4geli ha lanciato con l'opera <em>Tastiera ben temperata<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Con Clementi, Cramer, Dussek e Steibelt, le sonate di Beethoven erano in ottima compagnia. Lo standard musicale della serie era elevato, come si legge in un annuncio pubblicato in varie occasioni: \"Prima di tutto, sono interessato ad assoli per pianoforte in un bello stile, di grande respiro, in diverse variazioni della solita forma sonata. Queste partiture devono essere caratterizzate dall'attenzione ai dettagli, dalla ricchezza e dalla pienezza\". L'edizione fu stampata a Parigi, quindi la posta per Vienna era troppo lontana e troppo lenta per una corretta correzione. Di conseguenza, le sonate di Beethoven furono pubblicate con numerosi errori, persino l'op. 31\/1 con un'inserzione non convalidata di quattro battute. Beethoven reag\u00ec con disappunto e, poco dopo, ordin\u00f2 a Simrock di Bonn una nuova edizione con l'aggiunta: \"Edition tres Correcte\" (in francese nel testo).<\/p>\n<p>Queste tre opere sono insolite. Nell'Op. 31\/3, dopo una serie di esperimenti sulla struttura, Beethoven torna alla struttura in quattro movimenti che non utilizzer\u00e0 pi\u00f9 fino alla sonata. <em>Martellatore<\/em> op. 106. Tuttavia, egli non rispetta l'ordine abituale dei due movimenti intermedi. Inoltre, le caratteristiche musicali del movimento lento e del movimento di danza sono accoppiate, intrecciate, scambiate e tuttavia contrapposte: in seconda posizione si trova uno scherzo meravigliosamente sonoro, spesso nel registro baritonale, in 2\/4 (<em>Allegretto vivace<\/em>). \u00c8 seguito da un <em>menuetto<\/em> vecchio stile, con un tempo pi\u00f9 calmo, in 3\/4 (<em>Moderato e grazioso<\/em>). L'inizio del primo movimento \u00e8 altrettanto ambiguo: quella che all'inizio sembra un'introduzione a tempo moderato si rivela essere il tema principale del movimento. Secondo Carl Czerny, il brillante finale, che misura virtuosisticamente la gamma del pianoforte, risale a un'improvvisazione in cui Beethoven \"vide un cavaliere galoppare davanti alla sua finestra\".
