C\u2019\u00e9tait aussi un pianiste exceptionnel et \u00e0 ce titre, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 introduit avec succ\u00e8s dans les salons de musique de l\u2019aristocratie d\u00e8s son arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Vienne. Les m\u00e9andres de l\u2019histoire auraient oubli\u00e9 qu\u2019il avait \u00e9galement pris \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque des le\u00e7ons de violon avec Wenceslas Krumpholz (1750-1817, n\u00e9 en Boh\u00eame et ayant grandi \u00e0 Paris), si Ferdinand Ries ne l\u2019avait pas mentionn\u00e9 dans ses <em>Notes biographiques<\/em> (1838) : \u00ab A Vienne, Beethoven prenait des le\u00e7ons de violon avec Krumpholz, et au d\u00e9but, quand j\u2019\u00e9tais [encore] l\u00e0-bas, nous jouions parfois ses sonates pour violon. Mais c\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment une musique terrible ; car dans son enthousiasme, il n\u2019entendait pas quand il jouait un passage avec le mauvais doigt\u00e9 \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Beethoven avait-il le m\u00eame feu lorsqu\u2019il jouait de l\u2019alto \u00e0 la Hofkapelle de Bonn \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 18 ans ? Quoi qu\u2019il en soit, son \u00ab alto de service \u00bb a surv\u00e9cu jusqu\u2019\u00e0 aujourd\u2019hui. Hormis le r\u00f4le naturel de l\u2019instrument dans l\u2019orchestre ou dans les ensembles de chambre tels que le quatuor \u00e0 cordes et le trio \u00e0 cordes, il n\u2019existe pas d\u2019\u0153uvre compl\u00e8te de Beethoven (ni d\u2019ailleurs de presque tous ses contemporains) dans laquelle l\u2019alto serait un instrument oblig\u00e9. Le <em>Notturno<\/em> pour piano et alto op. 42 n\u2019est qu\u2019un arrangement de la S\u00e9r\u00e9nade op. 8 pour fl\u00fbte, violon et alto. Il a probablement \u00e9t\u00e9 arrang\u00e9 par Franz Xaver Kleinheinz (1765-1832), qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 entre autres professeur de piano \u00e0 Vienne au d\u00e9but du 19e si\u00e8cle. Mais comme le voulait la coutume \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, son nom n\u2019est pas mentionn\u00e9 en page de titre. On peut lire toutefois, en petits caract\u00e8res, l\u2019ajout \u00ab rev\u00fbe par l\u2019Auteur \u00bb (en fran\u00e7ais dans le texte), sur lequel Beethoven a bien insist\u00e9 dans une lettre du 20 septembre 1803 aux \u00e9diteurs Hoffmeister &#038; K\u00fchnel : \u00ab Les transcriptions ne sont pas de moi, mais elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 revues et, par endroits, am\u00e9lior\u00e9es par moi, alors ne venez pas me dire que vous \u00e9crirez que je l\u2019ai transcrit, car vous mentiriez, d\u2019ailleurs je ne pourrais pas trouver le temps et la patience de le faire. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019arrangement, publi\u00e9 au d\u00e9but 1804 sous le num\u00e9ro ind\u00e9pendant d\u2019opus 42, est int\u00e9ressant. La structure originale a \u00e9t\u00e9 transf\u00e9r\u00e9e au piano ; l\u2019alto a certes sa propre partie, mais il ne joue pas le r\u00f4le d\u2019instrument m\u00e9lodique principal.
