L\u2019orchestre ne doit en outre entrer ici qu\u2019au signal du pianiste (<em>Qui si d\u00e0 un segno all&rsquo; orchestra o al direttore di musica<\/em>). S\u2019ensuivent un nombre \u00e9tonnant de 586 mesures. Sur un rythme de marche, les cordes entrent comme de loin et s\u2019approchent en crescendo, les cors et les hautbois \u00e9changent de brefs motifs d\u2019appel avec un effet d\u2019\u00e9cho avant d\u2019introduire une m\u00e9lodie au piano que Beethoven s\u2019est emprunt\u00e9e \u00e0 lui-m\u00eame \u2013 de la chanson <em>Gegenliebe<\/em> (WoO 118) \u00e9crite en 1794\/95 d\u00e9j\u00e0. Elle devient le th\u00e8me des variations qui suivent, dans lesquelles les diff\u00e9rents instruments \u00e0 vent sont introduits un \u00e0 un, comme dans de la musique de chambre : la fl\u00fbte, les hautbois, les clarinettes avec basson, puis les chefs de pupitre des cordes en quatuor, enfin les tutti, avant les solistes et le ch\u0153ur.<\/p>\n<p>Cette \u0153uvre particuli\u00e8re, qui r\u00e9colte encore de temps en temps des avis divergents, fut la derni\u00e8re pi\u00e8ce au programme de la grande Acad\u00e9mie de Beethoven au Theater an der Wien le 22 d\u00e9cembre 1808. Elle fut le couronnement d\u2019une longue soir\u00e9e qui comprenait aussi les 5e et 6e Symphonies, des parties de la Messe en do majeur, l\u2019aria <em>Ah perfido<\/em>, le 4e Concerto pour piano et une fantaisie pour piano dont le nom n\u2019est pas mentionn\u00e9. L\u2019id\u00e9e de Beethoven selon laquelle tous les musiciens se regroupent est \u00e9vidente dans la note de programme, sur laquelle l\u2019\u0153uvre est annonc\u00e9e comme une \u00ab fantaisie au piano, qui se d\u00e9veloppe progressivement avec l\u2019entr\u00e9e de l\u2019orchestre, et se termine finalement par l\u2019arriv\u00e9e des ch\u0153urs en guise de finale [!] \u00bb. Johann Friedrich Reichardt a pass\u00e9 la soir\u00e9e dans la loge du prince Lobkowitz qui l\u2019avait invit\u00e9, et a consign\u00e9 ses impressions dans ses <em>Lettres intimes \u00e9crites lors d\u2019un voyage \u00e0 Vienne <\/em>(1810). Lui aussi a \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris par cette \u0153uvre, dont l\u2019ex\u00e9cution a cependant d\u00fb \u00eatre interrompue et reprise apr\u00e8s une entr\u00e9e rat\u00e9e. L\u2019id\u00e9e sous-jacente de rappeler la soir\u00e9e par la r\u00e9union de tous les musiciens a ainsi \u00e9t\u00e9 perdue de vue : \u00ab Onzi\u00e8me pi\u00e8ce : une longue fantaisie, dans laquelle Beethoven a montr\u00e9 toute sa ma\u00eetrise, et enfin, en conclusion, une autre fantaisie, \u00e0 laquelle l\u2019orchestre s\u2019est joint et finalement m\u00eame le ch\u0153ur. Cette \u00e9trange id\u00e9e a \u00e9chou\u00e9 dans son ex\u00e9cution en raison d\u2019une confusion si totale dans l\u2019orchestre que Beethoven, dans son saint z\u00e8le artistique, appelait \u00e0 s\u2019arr\u00eater et \u00e0 recommencer depuis le d\u00e9but, sans penser au public ni au lieu de repr\u00e9sentation. Vous pouvez imaginer combien j\u2019ai souffert avec tous ses amis \u00e0 ce sujet \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Mais cette composition, \u00e9crite \u00e0 la h\u00e2te, n\u2019avait pas seulement \u00e9t\u00e9 insuffisamment r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e. Le concert entier, d\u2019une dur\u00e9e totale de quatre heures, avait \u00e9puis\u00e9 \u00e0 la fois les musiciens et les auditeurs, comme le rapporte Reichardt : \u00ab Nous avons endur\u00e9 le froid le plus glacial de six heures et demie \u00e0 dix heures et demie, et nous avons pu constater d\u2019exp\u00e9rience que le mieux est l\u2019ennemi du bien \u00bb.
