Per rispondere a questa domanda, il violoncellista e storico della musica James Lyon ha esplorato diverse strade, dalla storia alla letteratura, dalla psicologia alla sociologia, alla ricerca di un terreno comune che trascende la diversit\u00e0 delle culture e delle tradizioni. In poche decine di pagine, cosparse di illustrazioni a colori, la scrittura vivace e piacevole di Antonin Scherrer rievoca le tappe della vita di Gustave Doret, musicista vodese con forti legami parigini: dopo un periodo a Berlino, durante il quale fu discepolo di Joseph Joachim, studi\u00f2 con Massenet e trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita nella Ville Lumi\u00e8re, dove dimostr\u00f2 le sue doti di direttore d'orchestra, ad esempio ai concerti di Harcourt, dove nel 1894 present\u00f2 in prima assoluta il <em>Preludio al Pomeriggio di un fauno<\/em>\u00a0di Debussy, o come direttore artistico dell'Op\u00e9ra-Comique. In effetti, si adoper\u00f2 affinch\u00e9 i musicisti della Svizzera francese si formassero in Francia, pi\u00f9 vicina alle loro affinit\u00e0 naturali, piuttosto che in Germania. Come compositore, la memoria collettiva ricorda le sue partiture per le F\u00eates des Vignerons del 1905 e del 1927, ma ottenne anche un brillante successo con la sua leggenda drammatica <em>Les Armaillis<\/em>un'opera rappresentata diverse centinaia di volte su molti palcoscenici. Il suo catalogo di quasi 400 opere \u00e8 costituito principalmente da un'abbondanza di pezzi corali, volutamente semplici e di stile popolare. In collaborazione con i fratelli Morax, scrisse le musiche di scena per il Th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Jorat di M\u00e9zi\u00e8res. Figura influente, anche grazie alle sue recensioni e cronache musicali volontariamente pungenti, e insignito di onorificenze, si sent\u00ec sopraffatto dalla musica del suo tempo, che non capiva quasi pi\u00f9, e si amareggi\u00f2 con pensieri sempre pi\u00f9 reazionari, vilipendendo tutto ci\u00f2 che si allontanava dai suoi criteri estetici.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
