A trent'anni era gi\u00e0 stato nominato professore alla Staatliche akademische Hochschule f\u00fcr Musik di Berlino e, quando emigr\u00f2 negli Stati Uniti durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, ricopr\u00ec, tra gli altri incarichi, la cattedra di composizione all'Universit\u00e0 di Yale. Al suo ritorno in Europa, insegn\u00f2 musicologia all'Universit\u00e0 di Zurigo. Questa attivit\u00e0 didattica \u00e8 proseguita nei suoi scritti didattici, il pi\u00f9 famoso dei quali \u00e8 <em>Unterweisung im Tonsatz<\/em>. Scritto nel 1946, <em>Formazione elementare per musicisti <\/em>era una risposta, da un lato, al fatto che i suoi allievi spesso soffrivano per l'empirismo e la superficialit\u00e0 della loro conoscenza teorica dei principi elementari della musica (ritmo, misure, notazione, ecc.) e, dall'altro, al fatto che, all'epoca, la maggior parte dei libri di teoria musicale non offriva un buon mix di teoria e pratica. La loro collaborazione ha prodotto in seguito altri cinque volumi. Le risposte di Stravinskij coprono un'ampia gamma di argomenti, dagli episodi della sua vita e del suo lavoro alle tecniche di scrittura e di esecuzione, alle persone che ha conosciuto e ammirato - Debussy, Ravel e Satie in particolare - e al suo rapporto con i musicisti in patria e con Diaghilev e i Ballets Russes. Sono precise, spesso obiettive, a volte taglienti e senza compromessi. Potremmo anche citare le sue interessanti riflessioni sulla musica del dopoguerra e sul suo futuro, nonch\u00e9 i suoi consigli ai giovani compositori. I due interlocutori hanno toccato anche altre arti, soprattutto la letteratura e la pittura, in particolare le scenografie disegnate per i balletti e altre opere sceniche dall'autore di <em>Il rito della primavera<\/em>.
