SUISA

SUISA is the cooperative of music authors and publishers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Over 45,000 composers, lyricists and music publishers from all walks of life are members of this cooperative, founded in 1923. SUISA collects royalties for them when their music is used in public in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Through contracts with over 100 sister societies worldwide, it administers the rights of a total of two million music authors and publishers. It licenses the use of this worldwide repertoire to over 120,000 clients, such as concert organizers, advertising and film producers, radio and TV stations, stores, etc., so that they can perform, broadcast, retransmit and reproduce this music. SUISA employs around 220 staff at its sites in Zurich, Lausanne and Lugano and, as a non-profit organization, redistributes licensing revenues to music authors and publishers after deduction of administrative costs.

In 2017, SUISA founded the joint venture Mint Digital Services in collaboration with the American music organization SESAC. This company is responsible for billing and administering the cross-border music licensing activities of SESAC Music Group and SUISA with online providers, and also offers its services to publishers.

SUISA represents what are known as «small rights». These include non-theatrical musical works, concertante versions of theatrical works and musical works featured in cinematographic and televised films. Large rights«, such as operas and musicals, are represented by the Swiss Society of Authors (SSA).
